And I am guessing my Linux distro will not just seamlessly move on to 0.99 by itself with an "apt-get update".

Generally this means that we just won't regression test signatures against that version anymore.

One step needs to be to EOL 0.97.x releases (as we should have done when we released 0.99, as per our EOL plan). As those older versions don't accept certain types of signatures.
