Thanks! The compiler version was the point.

I thought gcc-6 was working, but as I upgraded my Debian (9.3) from a
previous 9.0 version, the compiler version gcc-4:6.3.0-4 remained also
installed.

Even after purging it, the compiling process complained about not
finding g++, so I type a ./configure CC=/usr/bin/gcc-6 and the further
make, make check and make install went like a breeze.
