There is a significant difference between mainstream support, which ends
10/9/2018, and extended support.



In addition, there are numerous security and functionality improvements in
the latest version, MS Server 2019. It is currently available in preview


If the OP is seriously considering using his server for the long haul, I see
no reason to handicap themselves with an outdated version. Of course, if this
is just something for their own home amusement,then it doesn't make any
difference. I believe that I can say with confidence that forward looking
developers are not going to be spending a great deal of effort or time in
back porting their applications to work on a twice superseded server version.
