If I had more time I'd offer to log into your machine and run through
the build but I'm up to my ears just now.

I've run through

untar / configure / make / make check

here, logging the entire process to a 'typescript'.

I think the best that I can do right now is mail that to you privately
so you can compare it with the one you've generated yourself.  It's a
250kByte text file, about 4800 lines.  Do you think it might help you?
